A Brief History of My Grandfather
| Born in Baltimore, MD. to John Sibiski and Rosalia Guibinski on January 21, 1894, Mr. Sibiski
went to work (full time) as a Wool Sorter for Howland Croft & Sons - Worsted Yarns, Camden, NJ from 1907 to
1917. Howland Croft & Sons was located on Broadway at Jefferson Avenue and was previously known as Croft &
Priestley.. Desiring a change, he then went to work for: The New York Ship Building Co. in Camden, New Jersey as a "Ship Fitter" from: 1917 to: 1920. NOTE: in 1919 my grandmother passes away from causes unknown to me, that plus his love for ships and the ocean, he then went to work for: The Black Diamond Steam Ship Company in New York from: 1920 to: 1929 as an "Engineering Watch Officer". There he was responsible for 15 "Watertenders and Fireman". Seeking more responsibility, he then moved to: The Moore & McCormack Steam Ship Co. in New York from: 1929 to: 1941. Positions he had there were "Engineering Watch Officer, Assistant Engineering Officer and finally, Engineering Officer. He also supervised 10-30 Machinists and Boilermakers. |
And Then Came Along World War II
| On 28 Apr. 1941 he joined the U.S.N.R. Because of his 20+ years
of prior experience, he was commissioned a Lt. jg. The first ship he served on was the U.S.S.
Munargo (AP-20) from 1941 to 1942. He then served on the U.S.S. West Point (AP-23) from 1942 to 1943. Here is a picture of her when she was S.S. America Other names she (U.S.S. West Point) was known by

NOTE: Pictures, descriptions and histories of these ships were supplied to me by the following gentlemen: Mr. Bud Shortridge , Mr. Claude Williams and Mr. (Mac) McLain These gentlemen served their country in the U.S. Navy but unfortunately did not know my grandfather. Mr. Shortridge has indicated to me that he has a hobby of supplying Navy ship pictures, descriptions and histories to anyone who requests them. Visit his web site here . |
