Genealogy Fraud

If you are new to Genealogy (and even if you are not), you should be aware of the scams on line, some concerning money, and others pertaining to false information. After researching valuable Genealogy links for the purpose of this page, we have come across quite a bit of information pertaining to fraud aimed squarely at those who study Genealogy.

The links below scratch the surface of this problem.   Town Local Digital has taken the liberty of setting up an E-List for the purpose of fighting back.  An E-List (E-Mail List) is a system where those who join may send email messages to all of it's other members.  What better way to watch each others back, than to create an on line community, connected in real time via their email accounts, to forward warnings and information?  And what's more, these messages are added to our message archive, which is accessible to the public.

The first step at protection is knowledge.  Take the time to read the information on the following sites to see how scam artists are trying to take Genealogists for a ride.  If you agree that an E-List can be beneficial, then take a few minutes of your time and sign up.  It costs nothing, and your email addresses are secure.  If you would care to add this sign up panel to your site, the code is at the bottom of this page.

Johns Notebook Have you ever stumbled upon another genealogists research to find that your family line has been taken back almost to the Cave Man? Sound a little far fetched? Keep in mind that written records beyond the 16th century are few and far between.

Getting Started in Genealogy and Family History

Genealogy is the study of the descents of families and persons from an ancestor or ancestors. This study is undertaken by many people out of interest in their personal and family origins. As a hobby it can become pleasantly addictive, at least to the person concerned. However the study is also undertaken professionally, not just in order to provide a commercial service that can be used by people who are seeking help in researching their origins, but also for very serious legal and financial reasons. Thus there are accepted standards for doing genealogy "properly" - standards that we recommend you seek to learn and emulate.
